“I told John Mahama that I don’t have money to buy land at Sakumono so when he started building the flats which at the moment is twelve floors complete at Sakumono, I gave him gold in exchange of a house within the flats. 
 
He later asked some persons to lead me to the flat and show me on which floor I’ll be staying and I later told the whole world that Mahama had given me a house. 
 
I stay in a hotel whenever I come to Accra so a few days ago, I decided to move into the house at Sakumono, but Mahama sent some people to stop me and turned round to tell me that President Akufo Addo doesn’t want me to stay in that building. 
 
That day I had to sleep on the compound of the MPs flat till the next day.

“I’ve suffered a lot because of John Mahama, I’ve gone through hell because of my support for him. 
 
But now he’s stabbed me in the back and I regret ever campaigning for him. I feel so bad that I just can’t forgive myself.” 
 
 In 2016, Madam Akua Donkor told the world that then-President John Dramani Mahama gave her two Pajero vehicles and a three bedroom house.

Over the weekend, former President John Mahama (JM) simply drowned his opponents in a political tsunami during the National Democratic Congress (NDC’s) presidential primaries, leaving them flailing and gasping for precious oxygen. 
 
 Of course, any casual observer of the primary’ campaign knew what was coming, including, I am sure, his opponents. 
 
 Perhaps their only hope was that the inevitable blow would be merciful and delivered in a velvet glove. 
 
But the party spoke emphatically with an iron fist devoid of the niceties of even a flimsy paper glove.
 
<h3>
Candidate Mahama, obvious choice</h3>
Truth be told, the NDC really had no choice other than JM because he was their most visible and best-known candidate. 
 
 Some argue that it is likely the NDC will lose the 2020 election and that the party will struggle to win 2024 with a new face.

After all, since 1992, every incumbent party has enjoyed no less than two terms, and no fresh opposition candidate has ever won the presidency in a first attempt. 
 
 But, I am sure the general thinking in the party, quite understandably, is that there is always a first time, that JM is their best shot for now, and that should they get to that bridge in 2024, they will cross it. 
 
 The fact that constitutionally, he would only be eligible to serve one term if he wins the 2020 election, seemed to be far away from the minds of the over 213,000 delegates who donated their thumbprints to him last Saturday.
 
<h3>
Election 2020</h3>
I believe Election 2020 promises to be an exciting campaign, akin to a ‘Thriller in Manilla’ or ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ affair, to borrow from the screaming media headlines of the frenzied boxing heyday of Mohammed Ali, Joe Frazer, George Foreman et al. 
 
 We will, for the first time in our electoral history, be witnessing a presidential election battle between a former and an incumbent president.

It couldn’t get juicier than this. The former president is not amused over the fact that he lost his job. 
 
Now he wants it back.

And I do not blame him for wanting to be our first Comeback President.

After all, he holds the unenviable record of being the first incumbent President in this country to lose a re-election bid, and by such an embarrassingly huge margin. 
 
 Among others, he must want to wipe that ugly blot off his otherwise star-studded political CV which saw him rise from MP through to Deputy Minister, Minister, Vice President and then finally President. And so, he will go into the election with all that he can muster.
 
<h3>
Battle of records</h3>
Indeed, I believe the Election 2020 campaign has just begun-that is, if it did not begin on January 7, 2017 right after the inauguration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Cynics argue that this country is in a perpetual campaign mode because every decision or step by government and opposition is directed at the next general election. 
 
 I am excited about the 2020 campaign for the simple reason that neither candidate can make lofty promises to us without a reference point-that reference point being their own four-year records as President of this country. 
 
 On the economy, education, health, employment, security and a host of other indicators, we, the citizens, must demand of them what they did during their four-year tenure. 
 
 That would help us to decide between ‘Nana Addo, Toaso’ (continue) and ‘JM, Sanbra’ (come back). Simple.

Dirty politics?

Of course, there will be some for whom an issue-based campaign is an anathema. 
 
 They would prefer to wallow in the cesspit of dirty, ugly ethnocentric politics and divisiveness, pitching one ethnic group against the other.

Others would find refuge in distributing money and all manner of cheap items in a squalid to clinch the election. 
 
 It will be naïve to pretend that this will not occur, or that it will not make some impact on the electoral outcome. 
 
 But we can, and must, rise above ‘Moneycracy’ and ‘Ethnocracy’. 
 
 We have carried alcohol, and we have carried water, as our elders put it. We must strive to be more discerning. 
 
 The 2020 clash must be of ideas and records, not of ethnicity or money.

Or come to think of it, of macho men, boots, guns or slaps.

We have a nation to build.

In a press release, the police indicated the four suspects alleged to be part of an NDC vigilante group, Hawks, were behind the attack. 
 
The suspects are Husein Barnabas, also known as Warrior, Mijima, Damos, and Abu Taliban. 
 
This search comes after some executive and members of the NDC were attacked at the regional office in Kumasi on February 18. 
 
According to an eye witness, the assailant, associated with an NDC militia, the Hawks, shot another NDC man thrice; first in the leg while he runs and twice in the chest at close range as he lay vulnerable. 
 
Zainab Suleman, the mother of the deceased, told Joy News she looks up to Allah for strength, thanking the whole country for the support so far. 
 
“I pray that Allah strengthens, blessings and protect the youth in this country from such attacks…,” she said. 
 
Mohammed Iddrissu, the brother of the deceased wants government and security operatives to ensure that they get justice for Abdul Wasiu Iddrissu. 
 
“People should not be allowed to hide behind any party to do the wrong thing. A crime is a crime and those in authority must ensure justice is served,” he said. 
 
Meanwhile, Ambrose Derry, the Interior Minister has assured that the police will expeditiously investigate the murder. 
 
He said the issue will be treated as a criminal one and the perpetrators will be brought to book. He is, however, cautioning against reprisals. 
 
According to him, the incident provides an opportunity for all political parties to work together to stop political party vigilantism.

Former President John Mahama has been hit with yet another lawsuit four days to the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) presidential election slated on Saturday, February 23, 2019. 
 
In the latest lawsuit sighted by citinewsroom.com, a former Secretary of the NDC in the Trobu constituency in Accra, Edmund Palmer is seeking to restrain Mahama from contesting in the party’s upcoming presidential election. 
 
Edmund Palmer in his writ wants the court to stop Mahama “from pursuing his bid to be elected as a flagbearer/presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress in his capacity as a former president of the Republic of Ghana, without the permission of Parliament.” 
 
He is also seeking “an order of perpetual injunction restraining John Mahama from purporting to seek re-election howsoever as president of the Republic of Ghana without the permission of Parliament pursuant to Article 68(2), 68(3), 68(4), 68(5), 68(6),68(7) and 68(9) of the 1992 Constitution.” 
 
The former NDC Trobu Secretary also wants the court to order John Mahama “to wind up the activities of his campaign office that was established for the purpose of seeking to coordinate his activities in his quest to become flagbearer/presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress.” 
 
He further wants Mahama to stop all fundraising activities in support his re-election bid without the permission of Parliament.

Earlier in the week, one Stephen Agyeman dragged Mahama to court with the view of stopping Mahama from seeking re-election. 
 
In his writ, Stephen Agyeman argued that Mahama’s re-election move violates the 1992 Constitution and he is thus asking the court to stop the former president from contesting in the NDC’s presidential election. 
 
Mr. Agyeman is seeking a declaration to the effect that John Mahama “cannot purport to seek re-election as President of the Republic of Ghana” pursuant to Articles 68 clauses 2 to 9 of the Constitution. 
 
 
 
Agyeman is also urging the court to declare that John Mahama is not qualified to stand re-election as president of the country. 
 
“A declaration that pursuant to Article 66 (1) and 66 (2) of the 1992 Constitution, the defendant is not qualified as a candidate to stand for re-election as President of the Republic of Ghana on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress.” 
 
According to Agyeman, because John Mahama enjoys some privileges as former President, raising funds to support his bid for the presidential ticket of the NDC, without the permission of Parliament, he “has contravened Article 68 (2) of the 1992 Constitution.”

It’s turning out that Ghana, under the Mahama administration, spent about $6 million on rent on its foreign missions. 
 
It was for this reason that the current government has decided to make outright purchase of a building in Oslo for its newly-established mission in Norway. 
 
The $6 million rent, according to observers, is unsustainable, and it’s better for the country to go for outright purchase. 
 
Currently in Norway, Ghana could be spending not less than $45,000 every month on rent if the option of outright acquisition of the property is to be jettisoned. 
 
Editor-in-Chief of New Crusading Guide, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako Jnr., defended the current government’s decision to make an outright purchase of the building in Oslo, Norway. 
 
He said on Newsfile, a Joy FM news analysis programme on Saturday that the Foreign Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, cannot be faulted for the price of the facility. 
 
“I think the price for the facility is in order because it will become our property,” he said. 
 
The Oslo property debate was started by NDC MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa in Parliament when he tried to accuse the Foreign Minister of inflating the price for the building which reports say is valued at $12 million. 
 
President Akufo-Addo described the allegation as bogus during his encounter with journalists last week. 
 
According to Kweku Baako Jnr, Norway has proper systems for determining the cost of property unlike Ghana where arbitrary prices are set without any checks. 
 
The $12 million for the building and another $3 million for the residence of the ambassador were not set by the seller but independent valuers, he said. 
 
“It is not a question of somebody asking another person to inflate the figures so that we can have a cut… you can’t do it without being caught.” 
 
Explaining further, he said his checks in Parliament showed that “Oslo, Norway was not included in the documents submitted to the plenary for deliberation and approval before the committee in parliament.” 
 
“Okudzeto Ablakwa had called the chairman’s attention to some other information he had relating to the Oslo thing. The Chairman and Ablakwa came to an agreement that they were going to the floor of the house with the instant document, excluding the Oslo bit for deliberation and approval.” 
 
He, however, said that Mr Okudzeto Ablakwa brought in the Oslo, Norway issue in his contribution on the floor of the house. 
 
“The minister, whilst talking, mentioned Norway relative to established mission not purchase of property or properties.” 
 
“As we speak, we established a Mission on November 21st. The minister has given the address. We have not bought a property though we have established a residence mission.” 
 
The senior journalist argued further that “the intention to purchase two properties is distinct from what the minister said in the Hansard.” 
 
“Okudzeto Ablakwa, in expressing his reservations, proceeded to bring in what he and his chairman had agreed to hold on to for the minister to respond to the query. It was like a preemptive strike.” 
 
He said the Majority Leader was ‘brilliant’ in handling the issues and said the leadership of the house had told Okudzeto Ablakwa to channel his grievance through the appropriate committee. 
 
“But he rather increased the noise level and partisanship was brought into the whole thing.” 
 
“If you don’t approve you cannot spend. I am talking parliamentary business.” 
 
A former Deputy Finance of Minister under NDC, Mona Quartey, who was on the panel, could not fathom why the government should use part of a loan facility secured by then NDC government from Societe Generale for the country’s missions abroad to finance the deal. 
 
“We can’t afford the property. We are borrowing to finance this property,” she insisted. 
 
Government of Ghana, in 2016, contracted a $50 million loan facility from Societe Generale Ghana to finance the rehabilitation of Ghana’s missions abroad; part of the money is what is being used to purchase the mission in Norway instead of rent which will cost the country about $45,000 every month.”

Editor in Chief of the New Crusading Guide Newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako Jnr. believes former President John Mahama has lost focus in his campaign to become the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) going into the 2020 election. 
 
He said although Mahama’s chances of winning the flagbearer position is very high, his victory will be jeopardized if he pays little attention to delegates and recommendations of the Kwesi Botchwey Report. 
 
Former President John Dramani Mahama, who is on a campaign tour across the country to reclaim the NDC ticket for the 2020 election, has accused government of poor economic management. 
Earlier, he had promised not to insult his opponents during his campaign. 
 
But speaking on Joy FM’s News File, Mr. Baako said Mahama’s constant critique of the government may cause him more harm than good if he neglects some vital components of the NDC. 
 
“He will win hands down. I will be shocked if he loses this thing. 
 
Their focus should be on delegates and perhaps the Kwesi Botchwey report because they know the content. 
 
Something went wrong with the party machinery in terms of election 2016; so that should be the focus. If not, his campaign will suffer premature ejaculation before he wins the primary.” 
 
Abdul Malik Kweku Baako further mentioned that although Mr. Mahama’s criticisms are quite understandable due to his position as former President, his utterances may later be used against him. 
 
“He will win the primaries alright, he will become the flagbearer, but that time I am sure perhaps the campaign would have been degassed. 
 
 He would have been modeled so badly and I am not talking of insults. 
 
 I am talking about people checkmating him on the things he’s spoken out there and debasing them using facts. 
 
So, I am surprised there is a little bit of lack of focus”, he stressed. 
 
“Some of them have decided to stretch the scope by talking to school children and everybody and launching national issues. 
 
In Mr. Mahama’s case, because of who he’s been before, he is launching national issues because none of his competitors really have the same level of class. 
 
He’s launched national issues so he is being contested by his opponents; not just the internal opponents, but the external opponents are already dealing with him on all those issues.” 
 
 
Incompetent Mahama wants comeback to do more damage’ – Bawumia 
 
Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, has said it will be suicidal for Ghanaians to hand over the administration of the country back to former President, John Dramani Mahama. 
 
Dr. Bawumia indicated that the living conditions of Ghanaians will be worse off if John Mahama and the NDC return to office. 
 
“I hear the incompetent one says he wants to come back. He wants to come and do more damage. As if he didn’t do enough damage? Well, we are waiting for him. You have to remember what happened when we came to office. After many years of incompetent economic management, you cannot describe it any other than incompetent economic management.” 
 
‘Ghana needs experienced hands, not economics lecturers’ – Mahama 
 
Former President John Mahama has said that the current economic challenges being faced by the country can best be resolved by experienced persons and not ‘economics lecturers’ who merely engage in theories. 
 
He said experienced persons will better understand the situation and manage it in a way that will bring about stability rather than “economic lecturers who are just theorists.” 
 
“…that is what economics lecturers who are just theorists can come and lecture but they don’t understand that the practicals of running governments is completely different. NDC has done it before, at any time that NDC has been in government, this country has made progress,” he said. 
 
John Mahama further indicated that following what he described as the poor performance of the NPP government in the last 21 months, Ghanaians are ready to give the NDC another chance.
