Ghana EC to compile new voters’ register for 2020 elections

The Electoral Commission has announced it will compile a new voters’ register ahead of the 2020 presidential and parliamentary election.<br /> <br /> The decision was reached Wednesday at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, four years after the Commission rejected the idea for a new voters’ register to be compiled.<br /> <br /> Calls for a new voters’ register intensified in 2015 but were rejected by the EC,  triggering series of protests from pro-New Patriotic Party groups which argued the then register for the 2016 general elections was bloated.<br /> <br /> However, a panel chaired by the late Justice V.C.R.A.C. Potable water availability, how much can we spend to provide those items? What about the neighbourhood community? … All those are matters of data. You don’t plan without data; the so-called 40-year plan that was developed under the Mahama administration was to me, nonsense. How do you plan without data?”<br /> <br /> “You don’t have the adequate staff at the local level of the planning authority, which is the district assembly to collect and give you the data. Even before the most anticipated expose would be premiered, the GFA president, Kwasi Nyantakyi was picked up by the police after the president gave an order for him to be investigated for using his name to almost win some deal.<br /> <br /> Maverick politician and NPP MP, Kennedy Agyapong has been on Anas’s trail since then, threatening to expose Anas as well because according to him, Anas is also corrupt and takes money from some of the people he records to expose and those who are able to pay, will have their corrupt acts taken out of the video.<br /> <br /> Well, it seems, Kennedy Agyapong is not the only one accusing Anas of being corrupt. Another NPP member and regional chairman of the NPP in the Ashanti region, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi has also come out to say that, Anas is corrupt and that soon, he would also come out to expose him.<br /> <br /> In a video teaser that was posted by Adom Tv on their Social media handle, Chairman Wontumi was heard saying:<br /> <br /> “I don’t know Anas in NPP; I know Anas to be a Mahama Boy. He works for the NDC. He is a very corrupt guy and very soon I will come out. They, therefore, wanted the court to order the EC to kickstart the implementation of the Act since it was its statutory obligation.<br /> <br /> In the judgement, the court held that the EC had failed to justify the delay in implementation of the Act.<br /> <br /> According to the court although the EC was aware of its obligation to implement the Act, it “deliberately” failed to implement and gave no cogent justification<br /> <br /> “The 1st respondent (EC) is only good at reciting the challenges in implementing the Act and not finding solutions to the challenges”, Mr Justice Yeboah said.<br /> <br /> Also the court ruled that it was “outrageous “ for the EC to set itself an indefinite deadline to implement the Act without taking into consideration the rights of Ghanaians in the diaspora.<br /> <br /> credit: Graphic.com.gh
