Ghana EC to compile new voters’ register for 2020 elections

The Electoral Commission has announced it will compile a new voters’ register ahead of the 2020 presidential and parliamentary election.<br />
<br />
The decision was reached Wednesday at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, four years after the Commission rejected the idea for a new voters’ register to be compiled.<br />
<br />
Calls for a new voters’ register intensified in 2015 but were rejected by the EC,  triggering series of protests from pro-New Patriotic Party groups which argued the then register for the 2016 general elections was bloated.<br />
<br />
However, a panel chaired by the late Justice V.C.R.A.C. Crabbe was subsequently constituted by the EC to look into the validity of the calls for a new register.<br />
<br />
After soliciting views from stakeholders and Ghanaians, the independent panel concluded the arguments by the NPP for a new voters’ register were “unconvincing” and accordingly rejected same.<br />
<br />
“The panel is of the view that the responsibility for having a clean and credible register is the shared responsibility of all citizens of Ghana,” the EC said in a statement at the time.<br />
<br />
But IPAC after extensive deliberations on the matter on Wednesday, March 27,agreed for a new register to be compiled for the next elections which is less than 2 years from now.<br />
<br />
A statement from the EC said “the Commission will compile a new voters’ register ahead of the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections,” but did not give details as to when the exercise will be conducted.<br />
<br />
Limited registration for district level elections<br />

At Wednesday’s meeting, it was also agreed among stakeholders for a limited registration of new voters to be organized by the EC in May ahead of the upcoming district level election and referendum.<br />
<br />
The limited registration exercise, the EC said, will take place across all its district officers nationwide.<br />
<br />
It said the district level elections and the referendum will be held the same day in the last quarter of 2019.<br />
<br />
The EC said the timetable and roadmap for the district level elections, the referendum and other activities of the Commission will be made public in the first week of April this year.<br />
<br />
Inspection of party offices<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, the EC said it has begun inspection of political parties’ offices across the country and that “a comprehensive report on the findings of the inspection would be made available to stakeholders by the end of May 2019”.<br />
<br />
On the issue of audited accounts of political parties, it the EC has since March 21 this year published the report as required by law, but observed that most of the audited accounts submitted by the parties did not meet international audit standards.<br />
<br />
In view of this, the Commission has agreed to prepare a draft Constitutional Instrument to regulate and streamline the format of financial returns and audited accounts of political parties.<br />

The daughter of Nigerian preacher Chris Oyakhilome is now married!<br />
<br />
Carissa Sharon Oyakhilome tied the knot to her Ghanaian fiancé, Philip Frimpong, in a traditional wedding ceremony in Nigeria on Thursday.<br />
<br />
Carissa, a gospel singer and Philip, a businessman, announced earlier this year that they would get married in October.<br />
<br />
Their white wedding ceremony comes off on Saturday.<br />

President Muhammadu Buhari has dissociated himself from any role in the plot by minority lawmakers in Benue State to remove Governor Samuel Ortom.<br />
<br />
According to a statement by his spokesperson, Femi Adesina, “President Buhari will never be part of any unconstitutional act, and any attempt to link him with the inglorious past, when minority number of lawmakers impeached governors, will not stick.”<br />
<br />
Mr Buhari and his party, APC, have been criticised for the role of security agencies in allowing eight Benue APC lawmakers sit Monday at the assembly complex to issue the removal impeachment notice on Mr Ortom who recently left the party. The APC lawmakers accuse Mr Ortom of corruption, a charge the governor denies.<br />
<br />
The majority members of the 30-member Benue State House of Assembly are of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party Mr Ortom joined last week.<br />
<br />
The action of the minority APC lawmakers and the role of the police and other security agencies in the crisis has been condemned by many Nigerians including Senate President Bukola Saraki and House of Representatives Speaker, Yakubu Dogara.<br />

In his statement, Mr Adesina said President Buhari should not be dragged into the controversy.<br />

Even while attending the ECOWAS/ECCAS Summit in Togo, strident attempts were being made to drag President Muhammadu Buhari into the unfolding drama between the executive and the legislature in Benue State.<br />
<br />
Statements have been issued by different interest groups, insinuating that the President may have a hand in the development in Benue. This is paranoia at its worst, coming from people who have wittingly positioned themselves against the clean-up of the country, and the way we do things. They prefer business as usual.<br />
<br />
President Buhari will never be part of any unconstitutional act, and any attempt to link him with the inglorious past, when minority number of lawmakers impeached governors, will not stick. It will simply be like water off the duck’s back. Those with open minds know this, but those who cavil would rather source everything untoward to the President. It is murky ground in which they are now marooned, as fallout of their resistance to change in the country.<br />

When it suits them, they preach separation of powers and true federalism, and in another breath, they call on the President to interfere brazenly in affairs at state level.<br />
<br />
President Buhari will always stand by all that is noble and fair, and will reject attempts to drag him into infamy. People who stoke fires by deliberate acts of omission or commission, and then summon the President to come and put it out will find that this President will be guided by the Constitution at all times, no matter the attempt to entangle him in unwarranted controversies.<br />

Nigeria, an African country on the Gulf of Guinea, has many natural landmarks and wildlife reserves. Protected areas such as Cross River National Park and Yankari National Park have waterfalls, dense rainforest, savanna and rare primate habitats. One of the most recognizable sites is Zuma Rock, a 725m-tall monolith outside the capital of Abuja that’s pictured on the national currency.<br />
The name Nigeria was taken from the Niger River running through the country. This name was coined in the late 19th century by British journalist Flora Shaw, who later married Lord Lugard, a British colonial administrator. The origin of the name Niger, which originally applied only to the middle reaches of the Niger River, is uncertain. The word is likely an alteration of the Tuareg name egerew n-igerewen used by inhabitants along the middle reaches of the river around Timbuktu prior to 19th-century European colonialism.<br />
