The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) secured 79,883 votes followed by Bhutan Kuen-Nyam Party (BKP) with 28,473 votes.<br /> <br />  The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of the Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB) formally declared the results of the polls this morning.<br /> <br />  The DNT also received the highest postal ballots at 37556, while 55166 were EVM votes. <br /> <br /> The DPT had received 36912 postal and 53108 EVM votes. The PDP secured the highest EVM votes at 56180. Even then he was showing signs of becoming a diplomat, or someone skilled in international relations. Annan received his bachelor's degree in economics in 1961. Shortly after completing his studies at Macalester College, Annan headed for Geneva, Switzerland, where he attended graduate classes in economics at the Institut Universitaire des Hautes Etudes Internationales.<br /> <h3> <b>Early career</b></h3> Following his graduate studies in Geneva, Annan joined the staff of the World Health Organization (WHO), a branch of the United Nations. He served as an administrative officer and as budget officer in Geneva. Later UN posts took him to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and New York City, New York. Annan always assumed that he would return to his native land after college, although he was disturbed by the unrest and numerous changes of government that occurred there during the 1970s.<br /> <br /> Annan became the Alfred P. Sloan fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At the end of his fellowship in 1972, he was awarded a master of science degree in management. Rather than return to Ghana upon graduation, he accepted a position at the UN headquarters in New York City.<br /> <h3> <b>Kofi Annan Work with the UN</b></h3> In 1974 he moved to Cairo, Egypt, as chief civilian personnel officer in the UN Emergency Force. Annan briefly changed careers in 1974 when he left the United Nations to serve as managing director of the Ghana Tourist Development Company.<br /> <br /> Annan returned to international diplomacy and the United Nations in 1976. For the next seven years, he was associated with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva. He returned to the UN headquarters in New York City in 1983 as director of the budget in the financial services office. Later in the 1980s, he filled the post of assistant secretary-general in the Office of Human Resources Management and served as security coordinator for the United Nations. In 1990, he became assistant secretary-general for another department at the United Nations, the Office of Program Planning, Budget, and Finance. In fulfilling his duties to the United Nations, Annan has spent most of his adult life in the United States, specifically at the UN headquarters in New York City.<br /> <br /> Annan had by this time filled a number of roles at the United Nations, ranging from peacekeeping to managerial, and the 1990s were no different. In 1990 he negotiated the release of hostages in Iraq following the invasion of Kuwait. Five years later, he oversaw the transition of the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR) to the multinational Implementation Force (IFOR), a UN peacekeeping organization. In this transfer of responsibility, operations in the former Yugoslavia were turned over to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).<br /> <br /> <br /> In recognition of his abilities, Annan was appointed secretary-general, the top post of the UN, by the UN General Assembly in December 1996. He began serving his four-year term of office on January 1, 1997. Joining him was his second wife, former lawyer Nane Lagergren of Sweden. Addressing management members from the Ghana Export Promotion<br /> <br /> Authority (GEPA), who had paid a courtesy call on the company, the general manager said exporting to those countries would mean it would have to increase its prices which would make them uncompetitive or slash the prices and sell them at a loss.<br /> <br />  He, therefore, urged the government to consider granting the company tax reliefs and exemptions in order to expand and export to other countries.<br /> <br />  “We are a local firm which has generated its own resources to establish this company, with no support from the government. What we need from the government is leverages in the form of tax reliefs, exemption of duties and levies of some imported parts so that with time we will be expanding beyond this,” he stated.<br /> <br />  “We are looking at gradually going into component manufacturing and that is where the money and employment is. Imagine we go into automotive tyre manufacturing, the job creation chain, from the farmer to the factories. Even if we are exporting tyre alone within the sub-region, that is a huge market and will employ lots of people,” he added. <br /> <h2> Not afraid of competition</h2> Mr Kujoji also pointed out that the company was not afraid of competition, following the announcement that German car manufacturer, VW, was considering setting up a plant in Ghana.<br /> <br /> He said the company was just asking for government support and was not scared of competition. “We are not afraid of competition.<br /> <br /> VW is going to establish just a single plant here and what they are going to do is not different from what we are doing. They are also coming to import the components from Germany, assemble them here, and sell,” he noted.<br /> <br />  We should, however, look beyond this as a country because this does not create a lot of employment opportunities. What creates lots of jobs is the component manufacturing which is what we want to do,” he explained. <br /> <h2> Sharp u-turn</h2> Mr Kujoji also pointed out that he was surprised at the sudden turn of events following the announcement that VW was considering establishing in Ghana. “Since the announcement, there have been various calls and visits from government agencies and institutions.<br /> <br /> A team from the Ministry of Trade is coming here tomorrow. We met the Vice-President on Monday and met one of the Deputy Ministers of Trade and Industry on Tuesday and today we have you from the GEPA,” he indicated.<br /> <br />  “Had it not been for the announcement, for the 18 months since the government came to office, no government institution has set foot here,” he added. <br /> <h2> Assessing the Africa market</h2> The Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the GEPA, Mr Samuel Dentu, said accessing the West African Market was very critical and the GEPA was going to do what it could to support them to export to the sub-region.
