I think it’s going to be very, very difficult. For anyone who thinks that we can just play them like that, I don’t it will happen. It if happens, I take it. But it’s very, very difficult to beat them. We have analyzed them well. They are doing well, especially in their offensive transitions and always dangerous. They played 1-1 against Mali so we know what to expect. Despite the win, we can’t relax now, we have to continue. Big, big congratulations to the team for this fighting spirit. Coming from one nil down to get a late goal and be mentally strong and have the right team spirit to turn this result around. I think the boys run a lot, they did a lot of good work especially, defensive. Even though we allowed too many chances but if you watch the game closely you will see how even our offensive players were working against the ball in the heat of 42 degrees. Sometimes we missed some offensive actions, but the way they played from the front to the midfield, how Kudus, Ernest Nuamah worked defensively was massive. And this atmosphere in the stadium to survive is amazing. In the end the players that came in gave us freshness, strength and crating chances was really, really good to see. These are the kind of games that makes a team grow together. We still have to learn from the mistakes from that game. Everybody knows we have a young squad so I think it was a very, very good experience to get into the next games.</p><p><strong>On response from Kumasi fans going into his second game </strong></p><p>I was really overwhelmed the last we came here. To be honest I didn’t expect that because you can’t take that for granted especially after a bad AFCON that people are still supporting you. This is what makes me love Kumasi no matter what. In football and in every situation when you are down that is when you need support mostly and so I will; never forget what Kumasi did for us. They cheered us up and I think we had a decent game. We had 60% ball possession, we dominated them (Nigeria), we were just missing a goal. It was really, really good to see and I love coming to Kumasi and play here. Now this is surely what I expect also the support till the last whistle is made and I am very, very happy to be here. Because I know this will give extra kick to the players. Even in hard times or when things are hard they will support and it’s a good feeling. Mentally it’s good for the players to come here and know they have the backing of the Kumasi fans.</p><p><strong>On injuries</strong></p><p>We had some few injuries. Like I said it was a tough, tough match but it seems everybody will train fully today and I am sure that everybody will be ready for tomorrow’s game.</p><p><strong>On impact of substitutes in Mali game and having options </strong></p><p>For me, it’s very, very important. I know some might not understand sometimes if one player is called and the other not. There are so many different reasons. Sometimes a player is sick or injured, sometimes he can’t come. Sometimes he doesn’t feel strong enough to come and some players we talked to are still deciding whether to play for Ghana or for another country so it’s different reasons. But for me it’s very, very important to have different options. Sometimes you need a striker like Jordan (Ayew) who can hold the ball or somebody who goes one against one like Kudus, or sometimes you have a more defensive structure for the game. It depends on who we are playing and so for me it’s very, very decisive to see the options to score goals and also the best option how to defend and based on that plus the training, plus the games they played for their teams decides who will play but it has to fit with the opponent we have and this is very, very important for me and I was happy that the players who came in made an impact. Mumin (Abdul) was there straight, Jordan (Ayew) scored the winning goal and had a good assist where Thomas almost scored, Fatawu (Issahaku) was pressing well and looking really, really sharp, winning the ball for us to have the winning goal. Elisha (Owusu) was there on point, stopped some important attacks against us and I was really, really happy to have this bench. In all, I am happy with the squad and the way the guys presented themselves, very, very disciplined. They had a lot of fun; surely when you win you have a lot of fun but also before and the way the guys engaged with each other, I really, really like it and I think there is a lot to come for the future. Like I said Mali was a very, very good experience with a happy end. Even if we would have played 1-1, I would have been very, very happy about this squad.</p><p><strong>On Baba Yara Stadium pitch</strong></p><p>I really have to say Mali have a wonderful pitch. I know it’s difficult to judge our pitches. We wish the pitches will be better even when we trained in Accra. These are things that we need to work on all together. I hope that it will get better but this is the way it is and this is how we take it. When I was playing the pitches were worse so things are getting better gradually and I think we all have to push to make things better. But it’s not a topic for us to be honest. We are just focusing on the game; it’s the same condition for our opponents so for me it doesn’t matter. I trained and played on worse pitches.</p><p><strong>On assessment of the team in friendlies against Nigeria and Uganda and the qualifier against Mali</strong></p><p>The good thing is that I don’t think I will ever be satisfied to be honest. It is difficult to compare the two games where we had the freedom to experiment. We had a lot of new players there; we had a lot of new players and younger players than we have now so it is very, very different. Surely I want to win and the team wants to win every game but it’s different if you have friendlies where you can prepare yourself for the official games. I will always want to win, Ghanaians always want to win but friendly games are totally different. I have to try some things and I have to get some answers to the questions I have about the player and for this I have to try new players. I have to give them chances. I have to see which positions they are capable of playing and how they combine in various formations so for me we want to win every game but you can’t compare friendly games to the official games.</p><p><strong>On Ghanaians seeing the World Cup an opportunity for visa and the pressure associated with it</strong></p><p>Pressure is part of football and to be honest when I was playing there was much more pressure because there you have to play. You have to be disciplined on the pitch and this is way, way tougher than being a coach. I can just talk like you guys (Journalists). If I want to make it easy, if it doesn’t work then I will say the players didn’t do what I said. So it’s very, very easy for me. We all want to go. Some have been to the World Cup already, for some it will be the first time, for some it could be the last time so it’s always a big, big thing for the national team to qualify. What I can say from my point of view, I had the experience and to be honest the pressure in the two games against Nigeria was much, much higher because sometimes I think people forget where we are coming from. Before the World Cup we came out of the African Cup in the first round. Now also its not so easy to prepare a team for that matter to have everybody switching to my style of play and to be attentive, and to be positive and to believe after such a bad tournament. To be believe in the coaches, to believe in their team mates and themselves is very, very difficult so again, big, big props to the players for adapting to my style so fast. We had one week of training and I think they really, really did well and that is why they got rewarded with this win.</p><p><strong>On whether the team understands that people view the World Cup as an opportunity to travel to the USA for greener pastures</strong></p><p>Sure. Every player wants to go to the World Cup no matter what is it. I don’t know, may be Ghanaians should know that there are a lot of job opportunities in Qatar as well. But surely we just want to go there. Everybody wants to go there, not only us, also Mali, also the other teams, also Central African Republic. They all want to go there. They will die to go there and our players as well. I can see in the last game and I can feel in training where players are fighting for their spots, and we have to stop the training and calm them down sometimes so I can really feel how the players are eager to win and the players are giving their all to qualify for this World Cup.</p><p><strong>On Central African Republic stretching Ghana the last time we met and approach  </strong></p><p>I can’t be too specific with the approach because I don’t know what our opponents to know what we are trying to do. I know their strength is offensive transitions, we have to stop that. And once we stop that we have the opportunity to score a goal. I will bring the formation which is the freshest for the mostly likely positions to outscore them. But they have proven against Mali that can play a draw or win against any team so that will be tough. And surely, we prepared ourselves and watched a lot of matches and we have had a lot of analysis. And I am very sure that we have picked the right things out on where we have to improve. And also the right solutions on how we can play them out and if things work out, we will win this game.</p><p><strong>On playing a team considered as a minnow and its importance</strong></p><p>It’s a very, very important game. Like I said from the beginning, we have to take it serious; it’s going to be tough. Like in the past, I think we had problems when we are the favorites and now it was for us to use these three days to work on solutions on how we can outplay them. Which positions we can take, how we can position ourselves to bring out our biggest strength, especially on our offensive players. And I am confident that it will work but action speaks louder than words so we have to see what happens tomorrow. If one can find an emotionally charged theme, sum it up with a few catch phrases and put it on the radar of the mass consciousness, one can ride it to the highest political pinnacle.</h3><p>Such a politician can use this emotionally charged issue like the red flag of a matador waved in front of a charging bull, and lure the bull (the public), literally to the death.</p><p>This tactic can be even more beneficial when the targeted politician or political entity carelessly hands over to the opponent golden nuggets and gems that can be used as political tinder to burn and chase the targeted political entity out of office.</p><p>History is replete with all manner of politicians who created a cause célèbre (a controversial issue that attracts a great deal of public attention), and then rode it like a rampaging horse to political power. And history is similarly replete with politicians who gifted their opponents the cause célèbre with which to take them out of power.</p><p>One such cause célèbre seems to have cropped up naturally (unnaturally?) around the “Fix the Country” campaign, and its counter-campaigners, on the recently introduced tax increases in Ghana, which has led to increments in petroleum products and telecommunication services.</p><p>The ‘Fix the Country’ campaigners insist that these measures are causing too much hardship.</p><p>The government recently imposed taxes on petroleum and communication<br />services to pay for the cost of fighting Covid-19 pandemic.</p><p>It is true that costs of petrol and communication services have gone up since May 1 st , 2021. The reasons are not far to seek.</p><p>Government has introduced a number of taxes for a number of reasons, most, if not all, to take effect from May 1 st , 2021.</p><p>An announcement by the Ghana Revenue Authority ahead of the May 1 st listed some of the taxes as<br />follows;<br />2. COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy Act, 2021 (Act 1068)<br />This Act imposes a one percent levy on the supply of goods and services made in the country other than exempt<br />goods or services; and import of goods and services other than exempt imports.<br />The Levy also applies to the supply of goods subject to the VAT Flat Rate.<br />The COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy is not allowable as an input tax deduction<br />3. Financial Sector Recovery Levy Act, 2021 (Act 1067)<br />This Act imposes a five percent levy on the profit before tax of banks<br />The tax is payable in quarterly instalments. However, for 2021, the levy is payable in three instalments<br />commencing from 30th June 2021.<br />4. Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Act, 2021 (Act 1064):<br />This amendment has added two additional sections, 5A and 5B<br />5A - The imposition of an Energy Sector Recovery Levy of GH¢20 pesewas per litre of petrol/diesel and 18 pesewas<br />per kg on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)<br />5B - The imposition of a Sanitation and Pollution Levy of GH¢10 pesewas per litre of petrol and diesel respectively.<br />To do justice to the subject, one must go back and look at each imposed tax, in turn, and establish whether these<br />taxes are necessary. It will become clear, presently, that some of these taxes are good and beneficial, and some<br />are outright crass.<br />Like all controversial debates, no side is completely right, and no side is completely wrong. And interestingly, not<br />all the possible solutions that could have prevented us getting to this sorry pass, is on the table. And as for the<br />solutions beyond the screaming, they would simply be lost beyond the cacophony.<br />Indeed, to do a dispassionate discussion of the issue, the first line of the press statement issued by the Ghana<br />Revenue Authority (GRA), when it made the announcement on these taxes is instructive. The GRA stated, “The<br />Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority brings to the notice of the general public, especially<br />taxpayers that Parliament has passed three new tax laws and amended two existing laws to be implemented in<br />2021.”<br />To do justice to the subject, one must go back and look at each imposed tax, in turn, and establish whether these<br />taxes are necessary.</p><p>The statement “Parliament has passed” is especially instructive. In effect, these taxes were approved by the<br />nation’s parliament, in which the Majority hangs on that majority votes by the closest of margins. It means that the<br />opposition holds inordinate amount of leverage. Yet, the Majority, representing the government, and the<br />Moinority, representing the leading opposition party, saw nothing wrong with ALL the new taxes they were to<br />impose.<br />Now, are all these taxes necessary? We may need to study each tax in turn.<br />First, the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy Act, 2021 (Act 1068), which imposes a 1% tax on all goods and services<br />emanating from the country.<br />Without doubt, Ghana’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic was star performance, and a study of how other<br />nations have fared, should tell us that we are not out of the woods yet. A 1% tax on goods and services, in my<br />humble opinion, should not lead to increments in prices, if industry were sincere to take a little less profit as a<br />contribution to the Covid effort. This is especially so, in that Ghana, like the rest of the world, is not out of the<br />Covid menace yet. It is all too possible that the world may need to undergo a second wave of a more virulent strain<br />of Covid. Government can only take the steps necessary to be taken to save lives, if government is certain that the<br />people on whose behalf it takes the tough decisions, would follow it when it comes time to pay up. This is not<br />partisanship. This is reality. However, it is all too clear that the nature of politics we do in this country is a politics<br />fuelled by a ‘scorched earth’ policy, that is, destroy everything in your path, including the positives, if necessary, in<br />order to capture the state, because your principal aim is not to build, but to capture the nation, steal as much as<br />you can, and when the people catch up with you at the ballot box, as they surely will do one day, to hand over until<br />you can trick them to give you the mandate in a few years’ time. That is the NDC’s position, which is why it makes<br />very little noise in parliament, and raises Cain out of parliament, because the Covid tax is good in the short,<br />medium and longterm.<br />Indeed all political actors should come out in immediate support of the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy. We<br />committed the debt, and we need to pay it up. And it may save even more lives, yet.<br />The second is the Financial Sector Recovery Levy Act, 2021 (Act 1067).<br />This Act imposes a five percent levy on the profit before tax of banks.<br />The tax is payable in quarterly instalments. However, for 2021, the levy is payable in three instalments<br />commencing from 30th June 2021.<br />My opinion, is that this levy is unnecessary, and should not have been passed in the first place, if our members of<br />parliament on both sides knew what they were doing. Indeed, the so-called Financial Sector Recovery program is a<br />self-imposed hardship that the Ofori Atta Administration at the Ministry of Finance has inflicted on itself, and has<br />no moral and legal authority to pass onto the people of Ghana. This program arises out of the so-called collapse of<br />some private banks and financial institutions. I believe that if these banks and financial institutions had been<br />mismanaged and were collapsing, the sensible thing to do would have been to allow them to collapse, so that<br />other more efficiently managed banks would see the example of perfidious mismanagement.<br />To assume ownership of these financial institutions, and to seek to manage them as viable business entities, on the<br />back of tax payers, is unnatural, and if the history of all state banks in the past is anything to go by, would end up<br />with the same fate. There is also a very real possibility that down the line, Ghana would pay judgment debts for<br />the decisions taken with regard to these banks. All of which would have been avoided, if we had just cold-<br />bloodedly stood by and allowed them to collapse.<br />We should have just let them collapse, so that people learn the necessary lessons.<br />The third tax is the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Act, 2021 (Act 1064). This amendment has added two<br />additional sections, 5A and 5B.<br />5A is the imposition of an Energy Sector Recovery Levy of GH¢20 pesewas per litre of petrol/diesel and 18 pesewas<br />per kg on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), and 5B is the imposition of a Sanitation and Pollution Levy of GH¢10<br />pesewas per litre of petrol and diesel respectively.<br />As off the writing of this piece, I lack the exact figures on exactly what amounts the government seeks to make up,<br />what are the expected volumes of fuel products on which it is presumed to make up the fiscal shortage that the<br />government seeks to make up with 5A, and the duration of the period in which this levy would remain imposed. A<br />certain degree of education, on why the levy, and why it is pegged at the current levels, and for how long it is to be<br />imposed, would have been instructive. However, whatever, Ghanaians have still not forgotten the Energy Sector<br />Recovery levy, whose operations remain in great opacity to date, and the mention of whose name send both NDC<br />and NPP into great shivers.</p><p>With 5B, I dare say that it is one of the crassest decisions taken in our history in recent times, the so-called ‘Borla<br />Levy”, and parliament should very speedily go back into sitting and scrap this levy. Indeed, no member of<br />parliament, particularly those in NPP and NDC, should have the nerve of acknowledging the hardship that<br />Ghanaians go through, because Ghana does not need to impose collective taxation on a sensitive product like fuel<br />to ensure that we manage sanitation and pollution effectively.<br />It is a tax intended to rake in free money, hundreds of millions of dollars, for a particular company in Ghana. It is<br />totally immoral, and should be scrapped forthwith, and it is scary that any government would seek to bring about<br />any such law, and that a group of 275 men and women, who live on the taxpayer, would seek to impose such an<br />irresponsible tax on the same tax payer.<br />To the ruling government, the screaming that we are hearing from the population, castigating the government, is<br />purely self-imposed, and if we the members of this ruling government are not careful, we are just hammering the<br />nails in our coffin, for just thirty silver pieces.<br />We should remove the Zoomlion “Borla” Tax before it sends us to opposition, sooner than later.</p><p> </p><p>Source: <a href="http://ghanasky.com/" rel="noopener" target="_blank"><strong>GhanaSky.com</strong></a> | Kenneth Agyei Kuranchie</p>
