Ferjani Sassi scored the winning penalty in sublime fashion as Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles flew over Ghana’s Black Stars to progress to the quarter finals of the Total Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Egypt 2019 with a 5-4 post-match penalties victory.

Tunisia will now face off with tournament surprise package Madagascar in Thursday’s quarter final in Al Salaam.

Substitute keeper Farouk Ben Mustapha proved a gamble by head coach Alaine Giresse to bring him on for the penalties to be right as he saved one of Ghana’s kicks from Caleb Ekuban.

Tunisia all scored their penalties with Naim Sliti, Wahbi Khazri, Yassine Meriah and Dylan Bronn all scoring before Sassi sealed the tie. Ghana’s kicks were scored through Mubarak Wakaso, Jordan Ayew, Lumor Agbenyenu and Thomas Partey.

Substitute Rami Bedoui’s own goal at the stroke of full time sent the game to extra time after he dipped a header beyond his keeper Hassen Mouez as he tried to defend a Mubarak Wakaso freekick.

Bedoui had just been brought on to try and safeguard Tunisia’s 1-0 lead in the final minutes of the game, but his change was counter-productive.

Tunisia had gone ahead in the 72nd minute courtesy of a Taha Khenissi goal, but, as though fate would have it, the man who replaced him after 90 minutes undid the work he had done just 18 minutes earlier.

While it was Khenissi who scored Tunisia’s goal in the regular 90 minutes, it was the experience of Wahbi Khazri off the bench that turned the game into Tunisia’s favor.

Khazri came on in the 67th minute for Anice Badri and immediately, Tunisia’s game in the final third changed. Within two minutes of his presence, Tunisia came close when he ct back a cross from the left for Khenissi to shoot home, but the effort was blocked by Nuhu Kasim.

In the 70th minute, Khazri swung in a corner from the right met by Khenissi again, this time the striker’s effort being denied by the crossbar.

But two minutes later, his industry paid off when he won the ball on the right before playing Wajdi Kechrida through with the right back’s low cross into the box being turned home beyond Richard Ofori by Khenissi.

Before Khazri’s arrival, it was Ghana who had the best scoring chances and they felt as though they should have gone to the break a goal up but had a late first half goal disallowed.

Skipper Andre Ayew back-heeled the ball into the net off his brother Jordan’s cross, but the goal was disallowed for a handball in the build-up.

Ghana had another close chance quarter of an hour into the game when Kasim’s header from a Wakaso corner struck the upright while Andre Ayew had his effort from the rebound saved by the keeper.

With Tunisia’s late own goal, the game was forced into extra time and even then, it was a full contest despite the tired legs. Khazri forced a great save off Ofori with a strong shot from the edge of the area while Jordan Ayew fluffed Ghana’s best chance of the extra 30.

Asamoah Gyan who was a late second half substitute brushed a header his way, but his technique on the colley was awry, the ball going wide.
In a West African duel dominated by Mali, Ivory Coast was the most realistic team with a 1-0 victory. The Eagles may blame themselves for not having been able to score after so many many opportunities in the first half. The Elephants will face Algeria for a sport in the 2019 African Cup of Nations semifinals.

The start of the game is somewhat dazzling for the Elephants with striker Jonathan Kodjia deflecting a ball Wilfried Zaha could not recover.

Malians try to react on a long ball that gives nothing. The match seems well launched between two teams that accelerate the pace of play.

In the 11th minute, Moussa Marega on the right flanks is all alone but, in the penalty area, he hesitates when he tries to find Samassekou Diadié and the Ivorian defense emerges.
The Malians return to the charge and it is Abdoulaye Diaby who eliminates his vis-à-vis but, his shot misses the frame.
On a corner that the Eagles executed in the 17th minute, Abdoulaye Diaby misses the ball. The Malians are leading the game by multiplying the offensives but are clumsy in the last move.

In the 22nd minute, a free-kick about 30 meters away from Abdoulaye Diaby almost surprised goalkeeper Sylvain Gbohouo who, with his right hand, put it in a corner.

The Malians dominate the game and come close to the opening of the score in the 42nd minute when Moussa Djenepo managed an overflow on his left side and place the ball for Moussa Marega who missed the shot.

The two teams return to the locker room without any advantage.

In the 52nd minute, on a Malian attack, Moussa Djenepo eliminates an opponent before collapsing alone against the goalkeeper. The Ivorians then wake up a bit and besiege the Malian camp for five minutes with two corners in quick succession but they give nothing.

The Elephants are once again in trouble but, they manage to worry the Malian defense in the 67th minute after a pass in the back of the defenders and Jonathan Kodjia, at the reception, pulls aside.

The Elephants scored in the 76th minute following a clearance from the Ivorian goalkeeper. The ball bounces in the surface and the Malian defender judge the ball badly. Wilfried Zaha took the opportunity and did not miss his shot against Djigui Diarra.

The last minutes of the game are painful for the Eagles who have given everything without ever succeeding in making a difference. It is a heavy price after so many missed opportunities in the face of an Ivorian formation that was able to stab at the right moment. The Elephants get the seventh ticket of the quarter-finals and they will play against the Fennecs of Algeria on July 11 at the stadium of Suez.

Ibrahima Amada had put Madagascar ahead after nine minutes, firing the ball beyond Ley Matampi and into the top corner. Cédric Bakambu equalised 12 minutes later, heading home a terrific cross from left-back Ngonda Muzinga.

Madagascar, who defeated Nigeria on their way to first place in Group B, reclaimed the lead through Faneva Andriatsima’s header after 77 minutes. Despite Mbemba’s leveller, the underdogs held their nerve to set up a meeting with Ghana or Tunisia.
Egypt and Uganda part company with coaches

The Egypt coach, Javier Aguirre, was sacked just hours after the Africa Cup of Nations hosts were bundled out of the tournament by South Africa on Saturday.

Hany Abo Rida, president of the Egyptian FA, announced the 60-year-old’s departure and his own resignation less than three hours after the shock 1-0 defeat in the round of 16. Abo Rida called his resignation a “moral obligation” and urged his fellow board members to follow suit.

Aguirre had told reporters after Saturday’s defeat that he took sole responsibility but was proud of all of his players. “The game was open and saw many chances. The only difference was that South Africa managed to score,” he said.

Uganda have also parted company with their coach after exiting the tournament in the last 16. Sébastien Desabre is leaving the role in a decision the Ugandan FA described as “mutually agreed”, despite leading the Cranes to the knockout stages for the first time since 1978.
