Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe ex-president, dies aged 95 - BBC News

Mr Mugabe was ousted in a military coup in 2017 after 37 years in power.
<br />
<h3>
Mr Mugabe's early years were praised for broadening access to health and education for the black majority - but his later years were marked by rights abuses and corruption.</h3>
He won Zimbabwe's first election after it secured independence from the UK, becoming prime minister in 1980.

He abolished the office in 1987, becoming president instead.

His successor, Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, expressed his "utmost sadness", calling Mr Mugabe "an icon of liberation".<br />
<br />
 Mr Mnangagwa had been Mr Mugabe's deputy before replacing him.
Liberation 'icon'

Mr Mugabe was born on 21 February 1924 in what was then Rhodesia. The country, once a British colony in Africa, was run by a white minority.

He was imprisoned for more than a decade without trial after criticising the government of Rhodesia in 1964.<br />
<br />
 In 1973, while still in prison, he was chosen as president of the Zimbabwe African National Union (Zanu), of which he was a founding member.

Once released, he headed to Mozambique, directing guerrilla raids into Rhodesia. But he was also seen as a skilled negotiator.

Political agreements to end the crisis resulted in the new independent Republic of Zimbabwe.<br />

<br />
 Mr Mugabe, with his high profile in the independence movement, secured an overwhelming victory in the republic's first election.

But over his decades in power that followed, the international perception of Mr Mugabe soured, with an increasing number of critics portraying him as a kind of dictator.<br />
<br />
 In 2000, facing serious political opposition for the first time, he seized white-owned farms to resettle black farmers on - causing economic disruption but boosting his popularity among his supporters.

Around the same time, pro-Mugabe militias used violence to influence political outcomes.<br />
<br />
 In 2008, when he lost the first round of the presidential election, attacks on the opposition resulted in his rival pulling out of the contest.<br />
<br />
 He was forced to concede to power-sharing in 2009 amid economic collapse, installing rival Morgan Tsvangirai as prime minister.

But in 2017, amid concerns that he was grooming his wife Grace as his successor, the army - his long-time allies - turned against the president and forced him to step down.<br />
<br />
 What has the reaction been?

Deputy Information Minister Energy Mutodi, of Mr Mugabe's Zanu-PF party, told the BBC it was "very much saddened" by the former leader's death.<br />
<br />
 "As a government, we are very much with the family members of the Mugabe family," he said.

"He was a principled man, he could not change easily over his beliefs, he's a man who believed himself, he's a man who believed in what he did and he is a man who was very assertive in whatever he said."
<br />

"This was a good man."

</tbody></table>
For those of you keeping track, Meghan Markle has already been married to Trevor Engelson from 2011 to 2013, but does she have any children? The answer is no, though when it comes to having a family with her husband, Prince Harry, she is definitely on board.<br />
<br />
Although the couple haven't spoken in length about starting a family, during their first BBC interview as an engaged couple in November, Harry and Meghan hinted that having kids is going to happen for them, but just not right away.<br />
<br />
"Not currently, no," Prince Harry told BBC when asked about children. "But I think eventually, one step at a time and we'll start a family in the near future."<br />

<br />
Meghan has also been relatively quiet on the subject since dating Prince Harry. In 2016, she opened up to Lifestyle magazine about her life, career, and future family.<br />
<br />
"I also dream to have a family. It's all about balance, and I have so much happiness in my career and am fortunate to travel the world and see so many amazing things — it will also be nice to be anchored to something grounded and in the same place," she told the magazine for its September issue — which was conducted after she began dating Harry in July of that year. "Raising a family will be a wonderful part of that."<br />
<br />
<br />
Even before her romance began with the Prince of England, Meghan had discussed her desire to be a mum with another publication. In fact, Us Weekly discovered an old interview via Harper's Bazaar that the actress did with Best Health Canada where she quickly touched upon her family plans.<br />
<br />
In the interview, from April 2016, Meghan said that becoming a mum was on her "bucket list." Plus, she added that "I can't wait to start a family, but in due time." No matter when the adorable couple do decide to add to their group, family and being a part of the royal family is something that Meghan is ready for.<br />
<br />
"His family has been so welcoming. I have [met several family members] on his mother's side, it's been really important to me too," Meghan said during the couple's BBC interview. "The family has been great, and in the past year and a half, they've made me feel a part of, not just the institution, but of a part of the family."<br />
