There were just 18 seconds between Germany’s fate at this World Cup being taken out of their hands and Toni Kroos scoring from a dramatic free-kick to complete an extraordinary comeback and turn the group on its head. 
 
Just 18 seconds between Germany facing the very real prospect of exiting a World Cup at the first hurdle for the first time in 80 years and dealing the cruelest of blows to an impressive Sweden side who were left to nurse a sense of injustice on a spellbinding night in Sochi. 
 
Just 18 seconds between Joachim Low fearing the curse of recent world champions might soon extend to his side and the German bench sparking fury among their Swedish counterparts by celebrating wildly on the touchline. 
 
As if defeat was not bad enough for Janne Andersson, the Sweden coach, the sight of Low’s staff milking the moment was as hard to take as the stonewall penalty his team had been denied in the first half. “Some of the German bench celebrated by running in our direction and rubbing it into our faces by making gestures and that really got me annoyed,” Andersson said. “We fight it out for 95 minutes and then you shake it out and leave so I was very angry about that. The clock read 94.42 when Sweden’s players dropped to their knees after watching Kroos, who had been at fault for the opening goal, bend a breath-taking shot into the top corner after exchanging a short free-kick with Marco Reus. A draw would have left Germany’s fate in the hands of Sweden and Mexico in the final round of fixtures. Instead, they can guarantee their progress to the last 16 when they face South Korea in Kazan on Wednesday by bettering Sweden's result against Mexico. For 45 minutes, Germany had been desperate, second best to a Sweden team who were sharper, faster and hungrier. 
 
Only ref Szymon Marciniak and the video assistant referee will know why Jerome Boateng, sent off eight minutes from time for a second booking, was not penalised for bundling over Marcus Berg in the 12th minute but, even discounting that misfortune, Sweden carved enough good chances to have scored three by half-time. Yet there was always the feeling that those misses, and the penalty controversy, could come back to haunt the Swedes and so it would prove. 
 
 
Reus needed just three minutes of the second half to cancel out Ola Toivonen’s sublime opener and German pressure would become more and more pronounced. Reus should have scored a second from Joshua Kimmich’s cross on the hour then Robin Olsen tipped Mario Gomez’s bullet header over the bar before Julian Brandt crashed a shot against a post in stoppage time. 
 
Most inside the stadium must have thought Germany’s chance had gone there and then but there is a good  reason why the country have reached at least the semi-final stage of 21 of the past 27 World Cups and European Championships. They simply never know when they are beaten. 
 
“Something that I did appreciate was that we didn’t lose our nerve, didn’t break out in panic after going behind,” said Low, who tried to play down the provocative celebrations. “I appreciated the spirit of the team, we never lost hope. I didn’t witness any gestures  because after the final whistle we were really involved and we fell into each other’s arms elated rally.” 
 
 
It was a riveting game. Breathless, controversial, dramatic. The first half alone would be worthy of a study on how to perfectly execute a counter- attacking game plan against opponents who seek to monopolise possession. Defensive strategists the world over will have marvelled at the way Sweden soaked up German pressure and then pounced on their mistakes with rapid raids on the transition. They were as controlled and compact as those spaces left by Germany were alarming. 
 
Germany may have won it but South Korea will watch this, and the Mexico game, and know the world champions can be got at. Similarly, if Low’s team do advance they are unlikely to induce the fear they once did among opponents. There are clear weaknesses to exploit, not least their sluggishness dealing with sides who transition so quickly when they win the ball. 
 
Mesut Ozil was one of four casualties from the Mexico game and the most  notable but whatever Low was trying to achieve with the changes failed  initially. Germany – who lost Sebastian Rudy after half an hour with a broken nose – were mightily lucky not to  concede a penalty when Boateng brought down Berg through a combination of push and trip. The referee let alone the VAR should have spotted the foul. 
 
 
“My team said it was a clear penalty,” Andersson bristled. 
 
After only 15 minutes Sweden had made 19 passes to the world champions’ 169 but the only statistic that mattered in the opening period was the one that read Sweden 1 Germany 0. And what a goal it was. From the tireless Berg intercepting a pass from Kroos to the probing Viktor Claesson stroking a clever cross into Toivonen to the Toulouse forward cushioning the ball on his chest and holding off Antonio Rudiger to delicately lift the ball over Manuel Neuer, it was a masterclass in how to strike hard and fast. 
 
They had other chances, too. Berg drew a stunning save from Neuer with a header from Seb Larsson’s free-kick and Claesson, otherwise brilliant, made the mistake of not shooting first time from Emil Forsberg’s fine cross, electing instead to cut inside Jonas Hector only to be tackled. You sensed it could all come back to bite Sweden, even when Boateng was dismissed, and it did in the most heartbreaking fashion. What a game. What a night.

Belgium in 2018: a team who create many more goalscoring chances than they convert with a 40-goal centre-forward who is only 25 years old - and yet with qualification almost assured, Romelu Lukaku is not likely to be a concern for England yet. 
 
Lukaku came off injured as Roberto Martinez’s team pasted Tunisia under warm summer rain in Moscow but not before the striker had scored the 39th and 40th goals of his international career. Had he scored them in an England shirt, Belgium’s all-time top goalscorer would currently be tied for fifth place on the all-time list with Michael Owen, who had a similarly prolific early career, but even he did not score as quickly as Lukaku. 
 
The Manchester United striker now has 23 goals and four assists in his last 20 games for his country and for all those chances that slip away this is a team that creates them by the bucketload. 
 
When Lukaku bears down on goal, or runs in behind onto a pass from one of the many creatives in this team, you can never be sure what kind of finish is coming but - as with his club - he finishes enough to be a very significant figure at this World Cup finals.

There were two more for Eden Hazard as Belgium dismantled Tunisia in a way that England could never manage when they won in injury time against the North Africans in their opening game, and much of it was impressive. 
 
 
Hazard flitted around the Tunisia area, drawing one of the competition’s most reckless fouls from Syam Benyoussef after just four minutes which gave him a penalty that set Belgium on their way. Before the end, when the substitute Michy Batshuayi buried one of his five chances, it was possible to have lost count of all the opportunities that Belgium had passed up to make this game the biggest-margin win of the tournament so far. 
 
They still managed to concede a second in the third minute of injury time and it was that moment, and others, which will give their opponents in the later rounds reason to think. 
 
Lukaku, who came off with an ankle ligament injury that Martinez said will be assessed, looks unlikely to be in the team that faces England in Kaliningrad on Thursday. Belgium will qualify for the second round if England avoid defeat to Panama and Martinez said if that is the case he will make “major changes” for Thursday, including Hazard who has a calf problem. 
 
Even so, both nations facing the difficult question of whether first or second would be more advantageous. Martinez said he would only try to win Thursday’s game, although the thought must have occurred to him that second could be better. “Football has a strange knack of punishing you when you don’t do things professionally,” he said. “What’s important is that every player will have a role to play, we will take it very cautiously and approach the game against England really well. We won’t be thinking of anything other than approaching that game really well.” 
 
The obvious weakness is at the centre of the three-man Belgium defence where Dedryk Boyata, the Celtic defender, is not quite of the standard of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen either side of him. He was well protected in this game but better opposition may well feel they can pick away at that defence and Tunisia’s breakthrough came from a left-sided free-kick. 
 
Tunisia were set up to try to win the game, although they never looked like they would from the moment Hazard was taken out around the ankles in the opening stages. Their coach, Nabil Maaloul, suggested that his players never recovered from that first penalty, even though they were briefly at 2-1 thanks to Dylan Bronn’s header from a Wahbi Khazri free-kick, with the defender then injured and substituted, one of two Tunisians who did not last the first half. 
 
They simply did not have the quality to break down Belgium more than a couple of occasions, although there was a high-quality performance from Khazri who got his goal right at the last. A desperate time at Sunderland seemed no impediment to a very promising World Cup finals for the man now on loan at Rennes and he was skilful and explosive when on the ball. 
 
Martinez said that it was an “open game” which was an understatement given the freedom Tunisia afforded their opponents and some of the passing was breathtaking, with Dries Mertens and Hazard combining for the move that lead to the penalty. “You have two options,” Martinez said. “To play through the press you have really good opportunities, and if you don’t get through the press you will concede chances.” 
 
The reality is that with Kevin De Bruyne, Hazard and Mertens there was no chance of Belgium not finding a way through. Lukaku’s shot for his first was scuffed slightly but deceived Farouk Benmustapha. The Manchester United man did not always have his first touch tuned up and one would later run away from him before he made it 3-1 with a delicate dink over Benmustapha from a fine straight ball from Thomas Meunier through the Tunisia defence. 
 
 
 
That was just before half-time and at 3-1 down Tunisia had lost all shape and most of their hope. The fourth came from Alderweireld in the right channel who struck it from his own half, a long hit that dropped over the defence and Hazard took on his chest, then once with his left foot to steer past Benmustapha and another with his right to finish. 
 
The first Tunisia goal had come from a set-piece and Martinez said that the high number of goals from dead-balls was a consequence of the video assistant referees spotting grappling in the area. This time Bronn made a run from deep in the area and was not picked up by the Belgian defence, glancing a fine header past Thibaut Courtois. 
 
On as a substitute for Hazard, Batshuayi conspired to miss a run of chances, including one cleared off the line, another against the bar and one that Benmustapha actually saved. He finally slid one in at the back post before Khazri got his from substitute Hamid Naguez’s cross. 
 
Belgium had made their point - they have the goals in them, although the game against England is not shaping up to be the high-stakes decider it might have been.

Ahmed Musa scored both goals as 
Nigeria swept aside World Cup debutants Iceland to leave Group D 
intriguingly poised with one round of games to go.
The Super Eagles would have gone out with defeat but came good in Volgograd. 
 
Musa
 showed superb technique to fire Nigeria ahead on the half-volley before
 the Leicester player rounded keeper Hannes Thor Halldorsson to make it 
2-0. 
Iceland missed a late penalty - awarded after a video assistant referee review - when Gylfi Sigurdsson fired over. 
 
The
 result gives a slight lift to beleaguered group rivals Argentina. 
Victory over Nigeria in their final game would see La Albiceleste safely
 into the last 16 - as long as Iceland do not beat group leaders 
Croatia. In that event, goal difference would decide who progressed. 
 
Victory
 in that game for Nigeria, on the other hand, would now guarantee their 
progress. Having started the day bottom of the group, they find 
themselves second - three points behind Croatia, who have already 
qualified for the knockout stage. 
<h3>
Musa the difference as Super Eagles soar</h3>
Having
 gone down 2-0 to Croatia in their first game, Nigeria would have joined
 African rivals Egypt and Morocco in exiting the tournament early if 
they had lost here. 
They started slowly, becoming the first team in Russia not to have a shot in the first 45 minutes. 
Yet
 they were a different proposition after the interval as they went on to
 secure only a second win in 14 games at a World Cup finals. 
Musa,
 who ended last season at CSKA Moscow on loan from Leicester City, 
proved the difference having been recalled to the team after the Croatia
 defeat. 
 
 
He showed exceptional quality to open the scoring, controlling a cross by Victor Moses before lashing home from 10 yards. 
Having
 scored one of the goals of the tournament, Musa then hit the bar before
 scoring his second after Iceland's defence had gone walkabout. 
That goal ensured he became his country's all-time top scorer in World Cup games with four. 
Nigeria
 still have to beat Argentina to make sure of extending their stay in 
Russia but this performance, particularly in the second half, will give 
the youngest side at the World Cup a huge lift for Tuesday's group 
finale.

Iceland melt in Volgograd heat</h3>
Iceland
 went into the game having already tamed Lionel Messi - coming from 
behind to draw 1-1 with two-time winners Argentina in Moscow - and 
victory over Nigeria would have left them on the brink of the knockout 
stage. 
Instead the smallest nation ever to qualify for the 
tournament are not in control of their destiny after wilting in the 
Volgograd heat. 
It had started well for Iceland, Sigurdsson 
forcing two saves from 19-year-old keeper Francis Uzoho inside the 
opening five minutes; as many shots on target as they managed in 90 
minutes against Argentina. 
Yet they faded and were distinctly second best after the interval. 
Iceland were gifted a chance to score in the closing stages after Tyronne Ebuehi's 80th-minute foul on Alfred Finnbogason. 
But Sigurdsson's penalty, awarded after a VAR review, summed up his country's day, flying high and wide.

Who needs what to reach the knockout stage?</h3>
The last two games in Group D take place on Tuesday at the same time - 19:00 BST. 
Croatia
 - guaranteed a place in the last 16 after winning their first two games
 but need one point against Iceland to guarantee finishing top. 
Nigeria
 - will join Croatia in the knockout stages if they beat Argentina. 
However, a draw would be enough if Iceland do not beat Croatia. 
Iceland
 - must beat Croatia and hope Nigeria don't beat Argentina. Goal 
difference could prove vital and Iceland need a handsome win as Nigeria 
can still advance with a draw. 
Argentina - will advance if they beat Nigeria and Iceland don't beat Croatia. Again, goal difference could be crucial.

'This World Cup has come too early' - what they said</h3>
Nigeria boss Gernot Rohr:
 "What I like in my young team is humility, solidarity and fighting 
spirit. I thought before this World Cup we were here to learn. 
"I
 think this team will be ready in 2022 and this World Cup is coming 
early, but we have a good chance to win against Argentina." 
Iceland boss Heimir Hallgrimsson:
 "It's a strange fact that we are still in the race. We didn't think we 
would go through this World Cup without a loss and losses are always 
difficult to swallow. But we can still go through. 
"We've played 
Croatia four times in four years and we've often said we're like a 
married couple trying to get divorced but we always meet up again."

Teenage keeper impresses - the stats</h3>
<ul>
<li>Nigeria's
 Francis Uzoho is the second youngest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet 
in a World Cup match (19 years, 237 days), behind only Li Chan-myong in 
North Korea's 1-0 win over Italy in July 1966 (19 years, 198 days).</li>
<li>This
 was Iceland's first ever defeat in a group stage match at a major 
international tournament, having previously drawn three and won one of 
four games.</li>
<li>All six of Nigeria's wins at the World Cup have come
 against European opposition, and they have kept a clean sheet in five 
of those six victories.</li>
<li>This is Nigeria's first victory in a 
World Cup game by a margin of more than one goal since they beat Greece 
2-0 in 1994 at their first ever World Cup tournament.</li>
<li>Iceland 
have failed to score a goal in a match at either the European 
Championships or World Cup for the first time, in what was their seventh
 such game (five at the Euros, two at the World Cup).</li>
</ul>

What's next?</h3>
Nigeria's
 last game of the group phase is against Argentina in St Petersburg on 
Tuesday (19:00 BST) while Iceland face group leaders Croatia in 
Rostov-on-Don at the same time.
