Germany’s national team have already left their FIFA World Cup™ base 
in Vatutinki and returned home, leaving hotel staff to commence the big 
clean-up as members of the media begin packing their bags too. 
 
The overriding emotion is one of tremendous disillusionment – after 
all, nobody expected this. While there were some portents of doom in the
 run-up to the tournament, neither the team nor the media seemed able or
 willing to take notice of them. As a result, Germany became the third 
successive world champions whose title defence ended after the group 
stage. FIFA set out to search for the reasons behind Die Nationalelf’s failure.

"Everything works out alright in the end!" 
For many years this has been Cologne’s optimistic motto, and the 
national team appear to have adopted it as their guiding principle at 
this World Cup. After underperforming in a 2-1 defeat by Austria and 
narrow 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia in the run-up to the tournament, 
everyone assumed that the team stepping onto the pitch at the start of 
Russia 2018 would be transformed, as if at the flick of a switch. 
 
Yet this was not to be. The problems encountered in the warm-up games
 continued unabated against Mexico and were also evident against Sweden 
and Korea Republic. "Before the Mexico match I felt as though we had a 
sense of self-importance," Joachim Low said immediately after Germany’s 
exit. Clearly this was something he was unable to overcome. 
Incidentally, Cologne were relegated this season. 
 
Stat - Germany only led matches for one minute at this World Cup 
 
Key players with issues 
While many of Germany’s players have shown undeniable quality for their 
clubs this season, too many of the individuals expected to play a key 
role in Russia significantly underperformed. Ahead of the tournament, 
the main topic of discussion was whether Manuel Neuer would be able to 
get back to his best after a lengthy injury break. While these fears 
proved to be unfounded, Mesut Ozil, Julian Draxler and Thomas Muller 
continued the poor form they had already shown for their clubs, Jerome 
Boateng was still on his way back from injury, Toni Kroos remained 
largely anonymous and Sami Khedira failed to provide Die Nationalelf with some much-needed stability. 
Stat - Germany scored two goals at Russia 2018 – less than at any previous World Cup. Only Panama have scored fewer (one goal). 
 
Sticking with world champions 
This is a common theme for all former world champions when they exit 
their next tournament, and for good reason. After all, it is 
understandable that coaches choose to place their faith in players who 
have already won a major trophy in the hope that they can continue to 
build on this success. While this does not necessarily mean that every 
remaining member of the 2014 FIFA World Cup™-winning squad has passed 
the peak of their powers, it would have made sense to give exciting 
young players such as Julian Brandt more playing time, given the 
aforementioned drop in form among many of the old guard. 
Stat - Germany spent 43 per cent of their playing time in their 
opponents’ half, more than any other team. Spain and Argentina are next 
on the list with 36 per cent and 32 per cent respectively. 
 
Predictability 
While many within the Germany camp spoke of being surprised by Mexico’s 
tactics after the first World Cup game, the reverse was certainly not 
true. All three of Die Nationalelf’s opponents had a fairly 
accurate idea of how they would play and prepared themselves impeccably.
 Korea Republic even anticipated and neutralised Germany’s tendency to 
switch between wings in the last match. Despite their high lines and 
possession-focused play, Joachim Low’s side lacked cutting edge and an 
element of surprise in the final third. Although this is something that 
Leroy Sane could have offered his country, the Premier League’s best 
young player of the 2017/18 season was left at home to the surprise of 
many. Even set pieces – one of their greatest strengths in 2014 – 
provided little threat this time around. 
 
Stat - Germany only converted around four per cent of their chances –
 the worst ratio of any team at the tournament. The next lowest figure 
was seven per cent, with Russia leading the way on 38 per cent. 
 
Failure to convert chances 
It is certainly not the case that Germany failed to create any 
goalscoring opportunities at all, even if the number of clear-cut 
chances was extremely limited. Die Nationalelf missed several 
glaring opportunities in the Sweden match alone, and could have scored a
 couple of goals at 0-0 against Korea Republic. The defending champions 
lacked the kind of reliable finisher evident in many other teams at this
 tournament. Thomas Muller was unable to fulfil this role as many hoped 
he world, as were Timo Werner and Mario Gomez. 
 
Stat - Germany had 67 attempts on goal. In comparison Brazil had 56 and Spain 45. 
 
So what now? There is no doubt that the rebuilding process will last 
much longer than Germany’s World Cup adventures in Russia. On arriving 
in Frankfurt on Thursday afternoon, DFB president Reinhard Grindel 
explained that an agreement had been reached "for the management to 
submit their initial sporting analysis to the DFB (German Football 
Association) board over the coming week, after which point I also expect
 that the coach will make a statement on his future". According to 
Grindel, the DFB’s task now is to "pave the way for the radical changes 
we now need to make". The exact nature and extent of these changes will 
become clear over the coming weeks and months.

Germany had progressed past the group stage of the World Cup sixteen times in a row, but booked themselves a premature exit this year after losing to South Korea in stoppage time. 
 
Kim Young-gwon sealed their fate with a 94th minute goal, which was initially disallowed as off-side but a VAR decision saw the decision overturned as the ball came off Niklas Süle. 
 
Tottenham's Son Heung-min then added insult to injury scoring a 96th minute second Korean goal.  Though South Korea do not go through to the knock-out stages, the win is the first in their history against Germany.

The opening half saw a much-changed German side, with former talisman Thomas Muller starting on the bench, performing with a lack of quality that has defined their tournament.  In the second half the world champions were better and had plenty of attacking chances but just couldn't find the back of the net. 
 
South Korea's goalkeeper Cho Hyun-woo was dominant throughout, in particular denying Leon Goretzka a 48th-minute header which was on its way to the bottom left corner if not for the keeper's quick hands.  Centre-back Mats Hummels missed an open goal header in the 86th minute in what was Germany's best chance to grab a winner.

The result meant that Mexico survive and will progress to the last-16 despite their 3-0 loss to Sweden, who go through as the group winners. 
 
 
Opta's statistical pointers:

<li>  - Germany are the fourth defending champions to be eliminated from the Group Stage at the World Cup in the last five tournaments (also France 2002, Italy 2010, Spain 2014).</li>
<li>  - This is only the second time that Germany have been eliminated from the First Round at the World Cup having last done so in 1938 – however, this is the first time it has happened when the First Round has been in a group stage format.</li>

There were just 18 seconds between Germany’s fate at this World Cup being taken out of their hands and Toni Kroos scoring from a dramatic free-kick to complete an extraordinary comeback and turn the group on its head. 
 
Just 18 seconds between Germany facing the very real prospect of exiting a World Cup at the first hurdle for the first time in 80 years and dealing the cruelest of blows to an impressive Sweden side who were left to nurse a sense of injustice on a spellbinding night in Sochi. 
 
Just 18 seconds between Joachim Low fearing the curse of recent world champions might soon extend to his side and the German bench sparking fury among their Swedish counterparts by celebrating wildly on the touchline. 
 
As if defeat was not bad enough for Janne Andersson, the Sweden coach, the sight of Low’s staff milking the moment was as hard to take as the stonewall penalty his team had been denied in the first half. “Some of the German bench celebrated by running in our direction and rubbing it into our faces by making gestures and that really got me annoyed,” Andersson said. “We fight it out for 95 minutes and then you shake it out and leave so I was very angry about that. The clock read 94.42 when Sweden’s players dropped to their knees after watching Kroos, who had been at fault for the opening goal, bend a breath-taking shot into the top corner after exchanging a short free-kick with Marco Reus. A draw would have left Germany’s fate in the hands of Sweden and Mexico in the final round of fixtures. Instead, they can guarantee their progress to the last 16 when they face South Korea in Kazan on Wednesday by bettering Sweden's result against Mexico. For 45 minutes, Germany had been desperate, second best to a Sweden team who were sharper, faster and hungrier. 
 
Only ref Szymon Marciniak and the video assistant referee will know why Jerome Boateng, sent off eight minutes from time for a second booking, was not penalised for bundling over Marcus Berg in the 12th minute but, even discounting that misfortune, Sweden carved enough good chances to have scored three by half-time. Yet there was always the feeling that those misses, and the penalty controversy, could come back to haunt the Swedes and so it would prove. 
 
 
Reus needed just three minutes of the second half to cancel out Ola Toivonen’s sublime opener and German pressure would become more and more pronounced. Reus should have scored a second from Joshua Kimmich’s cross on the hour then Robin Olsen tipped Mario Gomez’s bullet header over the bar before Julian Brandt crashed a shot against a post in stoppage time. 
 
Most inside the stadium must have thought Germany’s chance had gone there and then but there is a good  reason why the country have reached at least the semi-final stage of 21 of the past 27 World Cups and European Championships. They simply never know when they are beaten. 
 
“Something that I did appreciate was that we didn’t lose our nerve, didn’t break out in panic after going behind,” said Low, who tried to play down the provocative celebrations. “I appreciated the spirit of the team, we never lost hope. I didn’t witness any gestures  because after the final whistle we were really involved and we fell into each other’s arms elated rally.” 
 
 
It was a riveting game. Breathless, controversial, dramatic. The first half alone would be worthy of a study on how to perfectly execute a counter- attacking game plan against opponents who seek to monopolise possession. Defensive strategists the world over will have marvelled at the way Sweden soaked up German pressure and then pounced on their mistakes with rapid raids on the transition. They were as controlled and compact as those spaces left by Germany were alarming. 
 
Germany may have won it but South Korea will watch this, and the Mexico game, and know the world champions can be got at. Similarly, if Low’s team do advance they are unlikely to induce the fear they once did among opponents. There are clear weaknesses to exploit, not least their sluggishness dealing with sides who transition so quickly when they win the ball. 
 
Mesut Ozil was one of four casualties from the Mexico game and the most  notable but whatever Low was trying to achieve with the changes failed  initially. Germany – who lost Sebastian Rudy after half an hour with a broken nose – were mightily lucky not to  concede a penalty when Boateng brought down Berg through a combination of push and trip. The referee let alone the VAR should have spotted the foul. 
 
 
“My team said it was a clear penalty,” Andersson bristled. 
 
After only 15 minutes Sweden had made 19 passes to the world champions’ 169 but the only statistic that mattered in the opening period was the one that read Sweden 1 Germany 0. And what a goal it was. From the tireless Berg intercepting a pass from Kroos to the probing Viktor Claesson stroking a clever cross into Toivonen to the Toulouse forward cushioning the ball on his chest and holding off Antonio Rudiger to delicately lift the ball over Manuel Neuer, it was a masterclass in how to strike hard and fast. 
 
They had other chances, too. Berg drew a stunning save from Neuer with a header from Seb Larsson’s free-kick and Claesson, otherwise brilliant, made the mistake of not shooting first time from Emil Forsberg’s fine cross, electing instead to cut inside Jonas Hector only to be tackled. You sensed it could all come back to bite Sweden, even when Boateng was dismissed, and it did in the most heartbreaking fashion. What a game. What a night.
