Avram Grant was granted a month leave by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) after the Black Stars thrashed Mauritius 7-1 in last June 2017 Afcon qualifier but the former Chelsea boss decided to overstay his leave as questions has been raised about his commitment level.
But the management committee chairman of the Black Stars of Ghana, George Afriyie has confirmed to the Managing Editor of Allsports.com.gh, Godfred Akoto Baofo that Avram Grant will be arriving in Ghana on Sunday adding that he has some answers to give to the FA for his overstayed leave.
“He confirmed to me [Thursday] that he will be arriving this week [Sunday] and I spoke to the protocol officer of the FA that he will be arriving on Sunday and I know the concerns been raised among the Ghanaian football public and I shared those concerns that the coach has over stayed his period because he was a given a month leave.
“He has some explanation to give to the management committee of the Ghana football association and as I speak he is coming back on Sunday, the FA is going to organize a press conference and them make sure that the concerns been raised now is also channel to him directly even though there are things that we (the management committee) are doing that I can’t come out publicly to say them”.
George Afriyie also rubbished claims that Avram Grant decided to overstay his leave because the Ghana football association owed him some money.
“I was fortunate to be part of the interview panel that interviewed Avram Grant and let me state it on record that even when it got to the point that we need to discuss his remuneration, the coach excused us and told us categorically that his decision to coach Ghana has nothing to do with money.
“He is a coach who has received sums of money when he coached Portsmouth, West Ham and Chelsea and since I have known him for the past 9 months, even at Equatorial Guinea Unibank came in to promise the team Avram said he didn’t want his team to be part of this money issues, so you can accuse the coach of anything but for money no,” he stressed.
Avram Grant will be playing his second 2017 Afcon qualifier game against Rwanda in Kigali next month.
