Telecom giant, Vodafone Ghana has awarded trophies, medals and other souvenirs to the winners of a two-day Vodafone Homowo boxing tournament held at Mantse Agbonaa on Monday to unearth the next generation of boxing greats.

The night saw 73 boxers, from 22 boxing clubs, engage each other in 65 bouts for the bantamweight, welterweight, middleweight, lightweight, light heavyweight, heavyweight, flyweight and featherweight award categories.

Samuel Yaw Addo claimed the flyweight category after beating Ishmael Lamptey; Wasiru Mohammed recorded a 15 second knockout against Ernest Kawaga; Benjamin Kuwornu won a split decision over Okpoti Tetteh; while Jibril Mohammed beat Joseph Tagoe by a unanimous decision in the welterweight category.

Ofei Dodoo defeated Delali Miledzi to win the middleweight category, Issah Inusah saw off Ebenezer Quartey to win the light heavyweight division and Briton, Andy Waters defeated Abraham Tabul to win the heavyweight division.

19 year-old son of Prof Azumah Nelson, Junior Nelson, defeated Sheriff Seidu to win the lightweight division, Solomon Tetteh alias Junior Messiah sealed the Discovery of the tournament award while Attoh Quarshie Gym was named the Best Boxing Club.

Marketing Director of Vodafone Ghana, Agnes Emefa Essah congratulated the boxers for their wonderful display of talent. “Vodafone is committed to nursing amateur boxing talents as they prepare for the African Championships and All Africa Games”.

Prof. Azumah was full of praise for his son’s performance and urged all amateurs to take their grooming sessions seriously to develop into champions.

The boxing event was graced with the presence of professional boxers and other dignitaries like Stephen Appiah, Joshua Clottey, Emmanuel Tagoe, George Ashie, Ayittey Powers, Stephen Appiah, Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, as well as other personalities from Vodafone.
